Considering that quite a few of Tomi Lahren’s viral video segments receive over 5 million views each, she is without a doubt a very influential figure on the Right. That influence has grown significantly since this last election cycle and continues to do so. I’ve agreed with her on many different issues, but she recently damaged her reputation with a statement made while being interviewed on The View. Ms. Lahren’s stance on abortion as a pro-choice advocate is troubling to say the least.
I want to believe that this move by Lahren to position her self as an atypical conservative wasn’t political, but I’m having trouble with it. It felt like a power grab for a new viewership bloc of liberal feminists. It would be a much more serious offense if this was a political move versus a lack of understanding about abortion. I believe the former is more likely because Tomi is well versed on politics, but it remains to be determined.
The main take-away point from her interview was “Stay out of guns, and you can stay out of my body” after she described herself as a constitutionalist. She also said it would be hypocritical for conservatives in favor of limited government to be pro-life and infringe “women’s rights.” I find that offensive to all conservatives. We, as conservatives, see the distinction that a child in the womb is not merely a part of a woman’s body, but that it possesses its own personhood. For Tomi to think otherwise is ignorance. A child can be born at 22 weeks or more: meaning it’s not a ball of cells. Any abortion after the 20 week period is undeniably murder. At 9 weeks an unborn child can feel pain. Any abortion after 9 weeks is undeniably murder. It’s real simple and I’m not going to delve into too much detail because it’s been covered in previous posts such as Defund it. and The Sanctity Of Life.
I’d like to see Tomi have a change of heart and apologize for the comments but it’s unlikely. She still has a great voice for conservatives all across the country, but she is running the risk of turning into a Megyn Kelly disaster. She will become obsolete if she goes against the core principles of conservatism, as she rightly should. There is no place for only identifying with half the principles of conservatism. You want to do that, call yourself an independent or a libertarian, but don’t tarnish the reputation of conservatism. Glenn Beck’s decision to suspend Tomi was appropriate and until they reevaluate the situation, she needs to tread carefully or risk losing her career.
